University of Debrecen community rallies to save seriously ill doctor

The entire University of Debrecen community has rallied to support the recovery of Levente Subecz, a seriously ill physician at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. In just four days, half of the approximately HUF 70 million needed for a cell therapy available exclusively in China has already been raised. In addition to bank transfers, people can also support Levente by returning recyclable bottles.

Levente Subecz, a physician at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of the Clinical Centre at the University of Debrecen, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March 2025 at the age of 38. His little son was only 10 weeks old at the time. Unfortunately, surgery and chemotherapy did not achieve the expected results, and the disease returned within a year.

Levente’s body is currently not responding to any available treatment, leaving his family with no further options in Hungary. Their only hope is CAR-T cell therapy, which is available exclusively in China and costs approximately HUF 70 million.

Levente is known by everyone as a precise, conscientious, exceptionally helpful and kind-hearted doctor and colleague. Even during his illness, he continued to support people who turned to him for help and made donations to those in need. At the initiative of his department, the university community is therefore being asked to support Levente’s recovery and help his family raise the necessary funds, according to their means.

“The wonderful community of the University of Debrecen always helps colleagues who find themselves in difficult circumstances or suffer a tragedy, because we look out for one another. This is not the first time that the university has come together to raise a large sum for medical treatment; this time, quite literally, we are collecting for a life. It is fantastic that half of the required amount has already been raised in just a few days. We believe that the full amount needed for the cell therapy will be collected in time, and we also believe that the treatment made possible by these donations will help,” Rector Zoltán Bács told hirek.unideb.hu.

How to donate

Due to technical reasons, donations can be made until September 30 by depositing or transferring money to the bank account opened in the name of the colleague coordinating the fundraising.

Support through recyclable bottles

In addition to making a bank transfer, people can also support Levente’s recovery by donating the value of recyclable bottles. When returning bottles at a collection machine, donors should scan the following QR code.
