A total of 96 Afghan citizens who faced threats following the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan because they had cooperated with Hungary and its allies arrived in Röszke, in southern Hungary, and were accommodated at a facility managed by immigration authority, the interior ministry said on Monday.

The first aircraft involved in the Afghanistan rescue operations arrived in Budapest late on Sunday with 173 people on board, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said.

Hungary has so far helped 10 families, altogether 78 people, out of Taliban-occupied territories in Afghanistan, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, the head of the Hungarian military, said. He said that the group were now at a safe “operative basis” set up for the purpose near Kabul.

The Hungarians still in Afghanistan, among them soldiers, must be safely evacuated from the country, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on public radio.

The 26 Hungarian citizens rescued from Afghanistan arrived by plane in Frankfurt early on Thursday, foreign ministry state secretary Levente Magyar said.

Hungary’s military allies have evacuated 26 Hungarian citizens from Kabul to Tashkent, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The current situation in Afghanistan indicates that the West “hasn’t learned anything”, and after Libya, Iraq and Syria, it will leave behind “ruin, hundreds of thousands of casualties, political chaos, a reign of terror by extremists and millions of emigrants in Afghanistan, too, foreign ministry state secretary Levente Magyar told public media.
